Sochi 2014 assessed - Games Readiness

On 16 September 2013, the State Commission for the Preparation and Holding of the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games in 2014 in Sochi – the supreme authority in the management of the Games in Russia – conducted a large-scale training session to assess pre-Games preparation.

The main purpose of the training, held under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the State Commission of Dmitry Kozak, was to test the readiness levels and cooperation between the Games management structures. The following operation centers were established as part of the State Commission: regional operation center and operation centers on transport, energy supply, construction and exploitation, security, media, and protocol.
A simulation of one day of the Olympic Winter Games was held, 10 February 2014, as this date features both preliminary and medal events in biathlon, alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, speed skating and short track speed skating. These events take place in many of the sites and venues of the Mountain Cluster and the Olympic Park. Participants in this training session included over 250 representatives of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, key ministries, agencies and organizations, as well as the International Olympic Committee, Roshydromet, venue owners and operation centers in the key areas of preparation and staging of the Games.
A majority of these participants took their real Games-time places in Sochi as the others were located in simulated facilities at the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee office. Main Operation Center (MOC), which consists of key Sochi 2014 functional areas and operation centers representatives, played an important role in communication between participants. Being fully equipped, MOC will operate until the end of the Games.
Participants of this training session worked together to develop procedures between the Games management agencies. Sessions also tested previously developed intera gency regulations in response to different simulated situations. During the training, participants used the same communication channels which will be utilized during the Games, such as video conference systems, telephone and radio.
The Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Kozak, said:
"The largest exercise took place in the most realistic setting and was the result of 18 intra-agency training sessions where the team was taken through a number of scenarios. The exercise demonstrated how well-prepared all services and organizations are ahead of the Sochi 2014 Games. It also revealed areas which require further work in the run up to the Sochi Games."
The President of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, Dmitry Chernyshenko, noted:
"These training sessions will allow the Sochi 2014 team to test all functions and services ahead of the Games. Due to their efficient operation, the world’s audience will see the Games that enforce ideals such as fair play and unity and showcase modern Russia that is open to the world."
